How it works

From a real lab to your kitchen table

Every Osmo story starts as a real news report and ends as something a seven-year-old can enjoy. Here's what happens in between.

1

Real newsrooms

Every hour Osmo reads new articles from science publishers such as NASA, ESA, ScienceDaily, MIT News and Science News Explores. Never social media.

2

A safety filter

Anything about war, crime, politics or scary topics is left out. When we're unsure, the story doesn't go in.

3

Rewritten for kids

Our AI editor rewrites each story at three reading levels, using only facts from the original article. It adds a quiz and a "big word".

4

A person approves it

Someone from our team reads and approves every story before any child sees it. Each one credits and links its original publisher.

One real Osmo story, written three ways

Ages 5–7 · K to Grade 2

Little explorers

"Jonathan is a giant tortoise. He is about 194 years old! Scientists studied his body to learn why he has lived so long."

Ages 8–10 · Grades 3 to 5

Space cadets

"At about 194 years old, he is the oldest known land animal alive on Earth. His vet gently took a few cells from inside his mouth so scientists could read his DNA."

Ages 11–14 · Grades 6 to 9

Mission leads

"Jonathan, an Aldabra giant tortoise weighing about 400 pounds, is roughly 194 years old. He arrived on the island of St. Helena in 1882 as an adult."

Ten planets to explore

Every topic is a planet

Kids pick the planets they love. Each story they read earns progress toward that planet's stamp.

The Passport with an astronaut, rank and stamps
Galaxy & Passport

A passport full of planet stamps

Kids design their own astronaut, explore a galaxy of topics, and collect a stamp for every planet they discover.

  • Ranks from Cadet to Star Captain, earned by reading
  • No streaks, on purpose. Progress only goes up, so missing a day never feels like failing
For grown-ups

Safe by design, not by setting

We built Osmo the way we'd want an app for our own kids: collect almost nothing, show nothing scary, and keep grown-up things behind a grown-up door.

No accounts at all

No sign-up, email, phone number or Google login. Your child gets an anonymous profile with a nickname that lives on their device.

A person checks every story

AI helps rewrite the news, but it never talks to children and nothing goes live until someone on our team approves it.

Grown-ups-only door

Original articles, settings and purchases sit behind a quick times-table check. Kids never see prices.

One tap to flag

If a story feels wrong or scary, kids can flag it. A "scary" flag hides the story straight away until we check it.

No third parties

Story pictures pass through our own server, so news sites never see your child's device. No ad or analytics SDKs inside.

Delete anytime, instantly

Grown-ups → Delete all data erases the profile from our servers at once. Unused profiles are removed after 400 days.

Osmo never asks for

Questions

Parents usually ask

What age is Osmo for?

Children aged about 5 to 14. When you set it up you choose your child's grade, and every story is shown at one of three reading levels: Kindergarten to Grade 2, Grades 3 to 5, or Grades 6 to 9. You can change it any time.

Is the news really safe for kids?

Osmo only covers science, nature, space, energy and technology, from science publishers rather than general news. War, crime, politics and frightening topics are filtered out, the AI editor is told never to use fear, and a person approves each story. If anything slips through, a single "scary" flag hides it immediately.

Is it written by AI?

AI helps rewrite each story in simpler words, using only facts from the original article. A person on our team reads and approves every story before it's published, and every story credits and links its original source. AI never chats with your child.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Osmo has no accounts, emails or logins. A parent confirms consent once, and the app creates an anonymous profile on the device.

Is it really free?

Yes. The daily edition, quizzes, read to me, and passport are free with no ads. Osmo Plus is optional and adds the archive, Hindi, natural narration, worksheets and a weekly challenge.

Can teachers use Osmo in class?

Yes. Showing stories on a classroom screen and printing worksheets for your own students is allowed under our terms. Write to us if you'd like to try Osmo with a school.

Where is Osmo available?

You can use Osmo in any web browser today at app.osmokids.space. The Android app is in review on Google Play and will be listed here as soon as it's live.

How do I delete my child's data?

In the app, go to Passport → Grown-ups → Delete all data. It's erased from our servers immediately. You can also ask us by email.
